FOREST AT THE DOUBLE

A tremendous advert for junior football. That was the only conclusion that could be drawn from a fantastic cup final between two super teams.

Forest started well and from a series of corners Lewis Whitlow swept home to put the greens in front. End to end stuff followed and with minutes of the half remaining Readstone equalised.

Our opponents came blazing out after the re-start, scoring twice in the first 5 minutes and having a fourth goal chalked off for offside. Fortunately there was plenty of time for Forest to claw their way back in.

Following a mazy run Alfie Percival found the corner of the net and soon after he repeated the feat. So 3 - 3 and more excitement to follow as the game became stretched at both ends. Harrison Howarth made the save of the match to thwart Readstone late on, and with only seconds remaining Tom Holden raced clear only for the keeper to deny him the winner. And so to Extra Time.

The game continued in a similar vein, with attack and counter attack, but no further goals in the first period. The second half was much the same. Alfie broke through and as we waited for the net to ripple, his shot smacked the crossbar. Penalties loomed as time ebbed away but there was just time for Forest to launch the ball forward. The scramble that ensued led to the ball falling kindly to Lewis, and he shot through all the bodies to find the net. Into stoppage time and Readstone through caution to the wind. Sending the keeper up for a corner the ball was cleared upfield. Alfie set off but was caught and fouled in the centre circle. Thinking on his feet, he was quickly up and chipped the retreating goalie with the last kick of the match.

A truly enthralling encounter and a fitting finale to another superb season. A third double in as many seasons for a side who never know when they are beaten.
